About

Established in 1876, the university was formed by the merging of two century-old institutions: Philadelphia College of Art and Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts. After being granted university status in 1987, the University of the Arts became the largest institution of its kind in the nation, offering programs in design, fine arts, media arts, crafts, music, dance, theater and writing.

Was one of my top picks for grad school. I attended Hampshire College in Amherst, MA as an undergrad, and earned my BA in Theater & Film there. Being from NYC, I was aware of UofA as an undergrad, but didn't think I'd get in (I thought it was more like NYU, but it's not, it's MUCH better and smaller and less selectiver) so I was scared to apply as an undergrad. UofA was VERY strongly considered by me for my MFA, BUT I ended up choosing The New School in NYC over UofA ONLY because they gave me the better Fellowships and Grants package, plus a three year guaranteed TA'ship. Otherwise, I TOTALLY would have packed up my apartment in Northampton, MA and headed south to Philly if the financial offer had been the same or better. It's ok, I was back in NYC, which to be frank, is just as good a city for the arts as Philly, if not better.

If you want one of the top schools anywhere for visual and performing arts , UofA is the place to apply. Not your traditional campus. The buildings are located within a two block area on Broad st. in downtown Philly. There admissions requirements are exacting but if you can get in, and if you're a city person, this is the place.

I am so eager to apply for this school, this school is my first choice out of all my options, I really hope I get accepted into this amazing school. I've heard so many great things about the University, seen many videos online regarding this school, and watched many films that the students in the film department have created and I'm so astound by the work I've seen from some notable alumni. I'm currently a senior in high school right now and I'm hoping to major in film making at this school. This would honestly be my dream. Does anyone know exactly what will guarantee my acceptance into this school. I'll honestly do whatever means possible to ensure myself getting accepted into this amazing University.

This is my daughters first year at UArts as a transfer student. I have had nothing but a welcoming, pleasant and knowledgeable staff to help me with this transition. It is her first year away from home and I was very concerned for her safety and well being. I visited Philly over the summer to check out the area. I instantly fell in love. The city is amazing and full of culture. I am more than comfortable with my daughter attending UArts. Amazing staff and students. I'm looking forward to her having a great year!! I want to thank the staff for answering all my questions and giving me peace of mind.

CLASS OF 1988. FIRST CLASS! (With new Name). I loved this place-still do I miss it at times. I always tell people it was like FAME the movie at times. I don't know how it is now but it was amazing when I went.
