Last week, we told you that chef and restaurateur Tod Wentz would be opening the Pearl Tavern in the former Irish Pub space right next to Oloroso in Midtown Village. We also told you that he’d leased the former TALK space just off Rittenhouse Square.Now, we know what he’s putting in at 2121 Walnut: Townsend, his South Philly flagship restaurant.The move was prompted by a desire to make the restaurant more accessible to his customers in Rittenhouse and the suburbs as well as the larger, newer kitchen in the Rittenhouse property. For the time being, he’s hanging onto the current Townsend space at 1623 East Passyunk Avenue to use for private events and pop-up dinners, with plans to open another concept there eventually.Townsend’s final service on Passyunk will be Sunday, September 1st. Wentz plans to open the relocated restaurant by Saturday, September 15th.

Townsend has been offering season, relaxed, elegant French dining since 2014. The restaurants' team of professionals at Townsend has earned accolades for its innovative bar program, wine selections, and unique presentation of a cuisine rooted in tradition.

The food is still excellent. Unfortunately the service and staff are not quite as good as the Passyunk location, at least on this visit. The dining room is significantly larger, but not better. The space looks empty and not cozy and comfortable. Despite having the delicious roasted oyster first course on the web menu, they were only offering raw oysters tonight. Despite my request, and an empty dining room, I was denied the roasted course...a big disappointment. The scallop second course was amazing. The Halibut main was also great. The Apple pot de creme dessert excellent. A great meal, but left feeling as happy as the old spot. I will give it another try soon and hope tonight was an aberration.

BEST I've had in quiet some time. It's just perfect, you'll have to just take my recommendation and get it. My friend couldn't decided so he got two (we did share everything, thankfully). Roasted Sea Scallops and the Escargot & Chicken Fricassee. The sauce with the scallops, insanely delicious. Like I'm going to like the plate, delicious. The scallops were cooked perfectly and I am a massive fan of frisee.

Awesome dinner in the new location on Walnut Street. The restaurant week menu was varied and each course of the three course dinner was spot on. Service was impeccable even during the rush and under the stress of newness. Each course was delicious and we were literally cleaning the plates for every bit of sauce from our Lamb entrees. The wines we enjoyed were memorable. Looking forward to going again ASAP!

Visited during restaurant week. As expected, good quality experience. Looks like they recently opened up at this location, you could almost smell the paint.. in a good way. Beef tartar and snail appetizer were really good. Enjoyed the lamb main course as well. The Alaskan char and the desserts left a bit to be desired in my opinion.
