About

Born in the Philippines, Chef Lou Boquila draws on his Filipino background for inspiration in the kitchen. He is passionate about creating innovative dishes and inspiring others to expand their palates. He wants to introduce the distinctive food he has known since childhood. As a young boy, Lou learned to appreciate his mother's traditional cuisine, which sparked his interest in cooking. His experience began as a dishwasher at the renowned Knave of Hearts where he learned the operations of a kitchen. He then decided to continue his training at the Art Institute of Philadelphia, and became an intern to Chef Kiong Banh of Twenty Manning. He started to develop his culinary techniques as he went from Line Cook, Sous Chef, and then to Chef de Cuisine of Audrey Claire in 2007. Along the way, Lou began to combine his culinary knowledge to best express his interpretation of Filipino food with a modern take. Named after his mom, Lou opened Perla in 2016 in the East Passyunk neighborhood of Philadelphia.

So noisy. There was a table of 9 which should not be allowed in a small restaurant. The other diners around us were terribly annoyed. Food was delicious. Always ask when making your reservation there how large the other parties are. Not planning to return for that reason.

I took my god-daughter to Perla to celebrate her birthday tonight. We are an African-American family of 5 who had never experienced Filipino cuisine before - we loved it! The staff was very courteous and helpful, working hard to squeeze us in for a last-minute reservation. The atmosphere was small and intimate. The food was delicious: the chicken was juicy and tender on the inside, super crispy on the outside. The rice and vegetables were cooked to perfection, the bread was soft and with a light hint of sweetness. The only thing I didn't personally try was the fish, but the rest of our table really enjoyed it. Carlo was warm, and welcoming and made us feel like family. He seemed genuinely interested in ensuring that we enjoyed everything. Eating Kamayan, family-style, was a little out of my comfort zone, but I still enjoyed it. We were told that we could have utensils and plates if we wanted but we decided to eat by hand. The presentation of the food was beautiful, the aromas were captivating and the ambiance was unpretentiously-warm and comfortable. I'm looking forward to going back soon, I'll probably opt for utensils next time but that's the only adjustment I'll need. I definitely recommend Perla for good food and a fun experience. Oh, and we had a ton of leftovers to take home. A definite thumbs up to this place.

Also ask for the mango habanero sauce, it give everything a little extra kick that was absolutely to die for. If you are on the fence. about eating with your hands, get off that fence and dive in hands first with both eyes open. This is undoubted one of the best places in the city.

The staff is extremely accommodating and friendly. Came here with a reservation for a group of 10 on a Wednesday. The food was amazing and I enjoyed the family style experience very much!

Simple food, prepared with love and care is the name of the game here but with everything so full of flavor, the fried fish and pork belly and roasted chicken were all spectacular. And at $40/person is it one of the most affordable tasting menus out there. Also ask for the mango habanero sauce, it give everything a little extra kick that was absolutely to die for.
