About

As the British marched triumphantly into Philadelphia during the last days of September in 1777, a strategic dilemma faced General William Howe, commander of the army. Surrounded by rebel forces from the north, east and west, his troops were in desperate need of supplies—gunpowder, clothing, food, and munitions. Without these items the capture of Philadelphia might become meaningless and the British would be unable to pursue and destroy Washington’s Army before winter.

South of Philadelphia in the Delaware Bay sat a fleet British ships carrying the army’s much needed supplies. General Howe gave orders to sail the fleet up the river to provide new provisions to his occupying troops.

The Americans had secured a British built fortification, sitting on Mud Island, just below the city and across the river from New Jersey’s Fort Mercer in 1775. By the fall of 1777 approximately 200 men were garrisoned at this fort, now known as Fort Mifflin, charged with the duty of holding the British off “to the last extremity” so that Washington and his exhausted army could successfully move into winter quarters.

I suggest going there during daytime and explore the grounds and tunnels yourself, be sure so wear boots as the grounds are wet and somewhat slippery, a flashlight or phone's flashlight will help. Then take the candle lit tour and hear about the amazing history and ghost stories that have happened in the fort, I felt like a kid, I loved the place and if I'm ever anywhere within 2 hours of this area, I'm definitely going back.

Hidden Gem! Great stop for locals and tourists alike. Good for all ages, my 5yr old military loving kid thought it was so cool. I did bring flashlights like another reviewer suggested - that was a lifesaver. A lot of people couldn't go into walkways or rooms because they couldn't see anything so I was so glad we had lights!! There were a lot of amateur ghost hunters trying to summon something 👻 🤷🏻‍♀️ Such historical significance, I wish this was better funded just to preserve it all. Walked the outer perimeter and parts of the wall/doorways were being covered by weeds and trees it would be cool of they cleared it and made a real walkway (we were trailblazing honestly)it started with a trail to the river then turned into a jungle.

Did the candle light tour! It was a really great time. I do wish we had a smaller group. We had about 20 in our group, many flash photo happy that took kind of the spookiness out of it. I cant wait to do the over night next year!

Several ponds and small lakes nearby have some great fishing. Fort Mifflin is a great piece of Philadelphia's rich history! Part of the grounds is still used by the Army Corp. of engineers, making this the oldest active fort in US History! Great place to fish and an even better place to visit and learn!

We came for the candlit tour it was so interesting and very informative . It is so amazing to see down in the tunnels. And hear the stories of what happened there. 10/ 10 would recommend. But please for the love of everything wear mosquito spray they have it on the benches when you get there. Also i captured an amazing pic of what i believe is a revolutionary soldier if i can post here i will .
