About

Founded in 1812, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University is a leading natural history museum dedicated to advancing research, education, and public engagement in biodiversity and environmental science. Visitors to the Academy have the opportunity to get face-to-face with towering dinosaurs, meet live animals, and explore a tropical garden filled with live butterflies. Philadelphia’s natural history museum offers surprises for all ages, from changing interactive science exhibits to a children’s discovery center, a fossil dig, and opportunities to interact with real science experts.

The Academy’s working scientists spend their days focusing on critical global issues in biodiversity, evolution, and environmental science. In the field, Academy scientists have traveled as far as Vietnam to sample wild bird populations for emerging diseases such as avian influenza, and closer to home they have been studying the effects of natural gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale. These research efforts and many others enable the Academy to provide accurate, real-time scientific information to the public on environmental and sustainability matters.

They've tried to cater to everyone, science buffs, kids and other visitors. And they do a great job! The level of detail is as much as you want, there's a section to tell you how the diaramas were made, there's short films being shown throughout the day in an auditorium, as well as hands on exhibits for kids with insect experts to hand. The cafe is a great stop too, plenty of choice. The gift store had enough choice for all budgets.

Always a fun time learning. My 2.5 year old loves “dinosaur bones” so he was through the roof today to enjoy the day with the dinosaurs. I’m a teacher and I always loved taking my students as well because there’s so much to see and do. Kind employees and perfect for all ages

Fun place for kids. Smaller than the New York Natural History Museum but offers great interaction program with live animals, including an live exhibition that kids can pet and daily "animal encounter" in the auditorium. Currently running "Dinosaurs of the World": it's a bit stretch as there are less than a dozen Dinosaurs in it for $7 per person. Free walkable parking on Sunday.

I had an absolute blast here! It has all of the classic natural history museum staples: Dinosaur fossils, taxidermy dioramas, insects. Everything in the museum is displayed in well thought out and visually interesting ways, with a bit more flare than I have seen in other museums. They have a butterfly conservatory that has a fantastic variety, is well maintained, and not as unbearably humid as others I've been in. The dioramas had more character to them than any I've seen before, and the taxidermy is of better quality as well. The dinosaur fossil exhibits were put together nicely, and there's even a place to observe paleontologists at work. The staff here are all lovely, the gift shop has a great selection, and it's both a great place for kids and adults alike.

This place is fantastic! My daughter's classmate had a birthday party here. The staff were great. They helped me find the location of the party easily and were great with the kids. There was more than enough to see and do hands on for our 2 and 7 year old children. And it really is cool to see so many different animals, dinosaur bones, and more. I highly recommend this place!
