The Guide to Making the Most of Your August 2019 in Philadelphia

It’s always a great matchup when the White Sox travel to Philadelphia from the windy city. The Phillies will have to bring their A-game to improve their league standings as they take on Chicago’s stars, such as Yoan Moncada and Jose Abreu. The most important aspect of this game, however, will be watching the Phillies bestow the greatest honor upon Bobby Abreu, as they induct him into the Phillies Wall of Fame. Notable career highlights from his time with Philly includes Home Run Derby Champion, 2x All-Star, as well as achieving the Gold Glove Award. 

It’s finally here, the first week of the preseason! Watch the Eagles, or as Philadelphians say the ‘Iggles’, take on the Tennessee Titans. This will be a great insight as to how successful the current squad is, relative to what surely will be a long year with a very competitive schedule. Luckily, all of Philadelphia will rest easy knowing our golden boy, Carson Wentz, is locked in for another 4 years, and hopefully, can help lead us on another Playoff run.

Can’t make the first preseason game? No worries! The Eagles last home preseason game will be held on Thursday, August 22nd against the Baltimore Ravens. A bonus of catching a game before the regular season begins is obviously, the price difference. You get to see the same players, as well as a rotation of the full squad, at a fraction of the price. One player, in particular, you may see get some playing time and said to make a big splash this season is an undrafted signee, T.J. Edwards. Plus, it’s always a great time to go out and cheer our team on. 

The Philadelphia Union have been very impressive throughout their season, reaching the first place at their peak. However, will they be able to defeat Atlanta United, the reigning MLS champions? For 3 points to be secured, the defense, anchored by Jack Elliott and Auston Trusty, must shut down the electric offense of Atlanta, consisting of stars such as Josef Martinez and Hector Villalba. 

The beauty of college sports is that you witness determined student-athletes who are playing their hearts out for the chance to go professional. Due to this, each and every game all players give their all on the field. With this in mind, join the Temple Owls at Lincoln Financial Field as they take on the Bucknell Bison. This is sure to be another exciting season for the Owls, especially with a new head coach, Rod Carey. 

This music icon needs little to no introduction, his story inspired hit movie and musical, “Jersey Boys,” now introducing, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons! If you’re jumping with joy right now, it’s very understandable, Valli has a unique tenor voice and an absolutely remarkable falsetto. Your ticket, which will get you into what will surely be a sold-out show, will allow you to be graced by his vocal cords, live in person! Hear hit songs such as, “Walk Like a Man,” and, “My Eyes Adored You.” Live music does not get any better than this.

Boasting 4 Grammy wins, including Best R&B Album, India Arie is making her way to Philadelphia! First releasing her debut album, “Acoustic Soul,” in 2001, Arie continues to captivate her audience with her skillful songwriting, and beautiful voice. Seeing her perform live will give you the opportunity to hear her true raw talents, and of course, hit songs such as, “The Truth,” and, “Video.” Moreover, if you haven’t had the chance to visit the Dell Music Center, this is an excellent opportunity to do so!

“Is this real life? Is this just fantasy?” Though it may fulfill some of yours, this is no fantasy! Queen and Adam Lambert will be performing in Philly! Queen is an absolute cornerstone of Rock music, and rightfully so. In addition to inspiring recent box office hit, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Queen possess countless awards, with highlights including induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as well as the UK Music Hall of Fame. I am truly unsure if anyone can name a better time than singing along live to, “We Are The Champions,” or, “We Will Rock You.” 

If you are a fan of jazz, this night is an absolute must for you. This show is a bit of a two for one special, featuring two of the biggest names in jazz, Herbie Hancock and Kamasi Washington! Hancock, on one hand, shaped the role of the jazz rhythm section, as well as produced the second jazz album to ever win the Grammy award for Album of the Year. Washington, on the other hand, is as iconic as it comes regarding saxophone players, being featured with top artists such as Snoop Dogg and Lauryn Hill. This is a surefire way to have a relaxing Sunday night full of soothing music, and hopefully, to create memories for years to come. 

The Backstreet Boys are back! They may no longer be considered boys, but this group will still provide a night full of upbeat hits that we’re sure you missed. This tour is on behalf of their latest album release, “DNA,” and is a must listen, for fans new and old. Looking for some ’90s nostalgia? This one is for you! 

This American Pop/Rock band found its roots of popularity through Disney Channel, however, years later, they’ve evolved tremendously. This growth stems from their heartbreaking band split, where they moved passed what they described as creative differences. It has been far too long for fans wanting to enjoy their music live, and this is the first tour to have your chance to hear it again! 

Lenny Kravitz is truly an act like none other. Kravitz is known for his “retro” style in which he incorporates various elements of different genres of music, ranging from R&B and reggae to hard rock. Combining all these elements, Kravitz has found himself much success in his career, such as being awarded the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance four years in a row! If this is your first time seeing him live, you’ll absolutely want to see him, “Again.” 

At some point through your life, the odds of you tuning into an episode of Seinfeld is high. Why not catch the man who started it all live for a night of comedic gold? Jerry Seinfeld will be taking the stage at The Santander Performing Arts Center and will surely leave the entire audience with a grin from ear to ear. If you are looking for your Seinfeld dose beforehand, check out the newest season of his show, “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” as the newest season released on July 19th. 

Punch Line Philly is a gem of a comedy club in the city of Philadelphia and gives an authentic feel to any stand-up act. With this in mind, Friday, August 2nd Shawn Wayans will be taking the stage! For many, Wayans won them over in his key role in the hit box office film, “White Chicks.” If you’re an older fan, you most likely remember his regular role in the hit ’90s show, “In Living Color.” Regardless of how you know him, he’s absolutely hilarious and worth your Friday evening. 

On top of just being an overall hilarious personality, Howie Mandel has found himself spread all throughout the entertainment industry due to his colorful personality. From hosting, “Deal or No Deal,” to being a judge on, “America’s Got Talent,” Mandel consistently spins his wit to win over the audience worldwide. If you want a night destined for memories and laughs, this is the perfect match. 

Ron White has proven to be a truly timeless comedic act. An immense portion of White’s fame and popularity stems from his excellent involvement with the, “Blue Collar Comedy Tour.” Since then, White has been performing typically a solo act, as well as finding himself on the New York Times bestseller list with his book, ” I Had the Right to Remain Silent…But I Didn’t Have the Ability.“ If you are after a dose of laughter, check this act out. 

It doesn’t get much better than 4 childhood friends, making it big time for simply doing what they love, comedy. The Impractical Jokers consist of Joe, Murr, Q, and Sal, all of which found fandom and fame after their hit TruTV show, “Impractical Jokers.” All of their shows are unique in their own regards, and they provide a very wholesome, genuine act that leaves everyone in the audience laughing. 

Gabriel Iglesias, better known as ‘Fluffy’, is making his way to the Philadelphia area! Iglesias provides a very refreshing act, that typically will shy away from profane language and controversial material, making his show great for all ages. Moreover, recently, Iglesias has teamed up with Netflix as a star and executive producer in a new series, “Mr. Iglesias.”  His role as a high school teacher attempting to help guide misfit students onto a better path is absolutely hilarious, and an overall must watch. Be sure to check this show out as Iglesias typically performs in much larger venues, after all, he sold out the Madison Square Garden! 

The 2nd street festival is a perfect way to kick off your August! This festival spans the 600-1100 blocks of North 2nd street and has fun around every corner. This 10-hour event features something for everyone, from live entertainment and food to arts and crafts vendors. The best part is, the funds raised go towards block beautification of Northern Liberties, so have a fun time and help benefit your community! 

In Philadelphia, we are a true melting pot of cultures, each with its own uniqueness. As part of PECO’s Multicultural Series, the ACANA African Festival is back for its annual event! Here, it is a day-long celebration to honor African immigrants and African-American culture. This will be a true cultural experience and will include lots of tasty eats, live music, and even a soccer tournament. 

If you are a lover of peaches, celebrate the National Month of the peach at the Peddler’s Village Peach Festival & Sidewalk sale! All things peach will be available at outdoor carts, as well as inside the many shops and restaurants that call Peddler’s Village home. Moreover, if you like a good bargain, the sidewalk sale will provide shoppers with excellent deals that are once in a lifetime. 

Another great showcase of the PECO Multicultural Series is the 32nd Annual Philadelphia Caribbean Festival! Here, you won’t need a passport to get a taste of these 14 Caribbean islands. From island-inspired arts and crafts to fashion, this festival will be sure to keep you entertained the entire time you’re there. Plus, you can’t forget to try some of the delicious Caribbean cuisines that will be present, such as jerk chicken or curried goat! 

The Obon celebration is designed in Japanese culture to celebrate their ancestors. This festival will now meet the great city of Philadelphia, for you to experience and enjoy! The unique experiences here will include Bon Odori dance, as well as taiko drumming performances. And of course, with any good festival, there will be food, including Dump N Roll Philadelphia, as well as a vendor market with homemade items and apparel. Please note this will be held outside the Shofuso Japanese house and garden, therefore, to visit the house, it will cost you regular admission prices ranging from $8-$12. 

This one-night extravaganza features acclaimed pianist Ching-Yun Hu, recently returning from a sold-out world tour. Through her musical display, the underlying theme will be Mediterranean-inspired. In addition, Ching-Yun Hu does tremendous work inspiring music worldwide in her free time. She is the founder of the Yun-Hsiang International Music Festival in Taipei, as well as the Philadelphia Young Pianists’ Academy. We highly recommended giving this show a visit! 

Another excellent production by the Bucks County Center for the Performing Arts will be here to keep you entertained with another hit musical. “The Producers” is based on a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his accountant, who devise a scheme to tank their company via a flop of a production. This, which they were hoping would let them sneak away with millions of dollars from their backers, ended doing the total opposite, as it was a complete hit! Be sure to see this musical live if you want to find out where their antics take them!

Grab your dancing shoes, Grease in concert is coming to the TD Pavilion! Experience the renowned soundtrack performed live to the film by none other than The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. The film will be projected on three different giant screens to make sure that everyone has a great view of this beloved romantic musical comedy. If you need some “Summer Lovin'” in your August, this is the perfect evening. 

This new and exciting comedy theatre performance will provide a journey for the audience. Venturing across Europe from the frightening Transylvanian mountains, and ultimately to the seaside town of Whitby. Through this venture, Professor Van Helsing and his three amateur actors attempt to stage a factual theatrical production of the events of Dracula.  This is after Van Helsing’s story was stolen by Bram Stoker, and turned into a fictional story. This comedy will surely keep you entertained for the duration of around 2 hours and puts a fun twist on the legendary story of Dracula. 

Theater fans, the show that has been sweeping the nation is finally in Philadelphia, HAMILTON is here! The storyline paints the picture of America’s Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, who became George Washington’s right-hand man during the war for independence, and ultimately, the new nation’s first Treasury Secretary. The show has a modern twist, incorporating music from hip-hop and R&B to blues, providing a delightful experience for all. Plus, catching this show in Philly saves you the tremendous journey to New York City to catch it on Broadway! 

The time for unparalleled fun for kids in Philly is now! On Saturday, August 3rd, North Broad Street will be shut down for 5 hours from all vehicles, this means, the street is yours! Bring your bikes, scooters, you name it and have a blast! This event is truly an experience like none other as any other day, this street would be full of traffic, rendering it impossible to do the activities this event will allow. 

The Philadelphia Magic Gardens routinely provide a place of exploration and beauty for Philadelphians and far beyond our city limits. This garden of elegance incorporates the artistic abilities used by Isaiah Zagar via handmade tiles, bottles, and the intertwining of international folk art. The guided tour provides a great look into the Gardens and showcases many fun tidbits that you may have never known or perhaps overlooked. Plus, it’s located on South Street, so afterward, take the family for a world famous, Jim’s Cheesesteak. 

Burholme Park will be transformed on Saturday, August 17th to a family fun Food Truck & Craft Festival! This day will be full of children’s activities, as well as crafters and live music. Moreover, have your pick at countless food trucks to satisfy your appetite! This event is free to get into, so no need to worry about tickets or an extra cost to bring the family along! 

This is another free event that will provide a night of fun for the entire family! The Franklin Institute is hosting a community night where they’ll have hands-on activities and live science shows. Not only will the kids be having the time of their life, but more importantly, they will be learning! No tickets are required for this event, however, on-site registration is required. 

Your little ones are going to absolutely love this show! The Wiggles are coming to Philadelphia as part of their Party Time Tour! Featured will be Dorothy the Dinosaur, Captain Feathersword, and many more! Sing and dance along to all the Wiggles songs you know and love, and maybe learn a new one or two. Without a doubt, you’ll be a hero in their book for taking them to this show!

End your summer with the best music festival in Philadelphia! Made in America, founded by Jay-Z, highlights the absolute best artists of the year. The line-up for this year is extensive and features all the fan favorites, ranging from Travis Scott and Cardi B to Juide Wrld and Lil Uzi Vert. The two-day ticket is well worth it given the high amount of class performers you get to see! In addition to the music, if you get hungry at any point, not to worry! There will be plentiful amounts of food vendors available at your disposal. 

Haven’t made your way out to the Blue Cross RiverRink Summer Fest? Here is your last chance! The Summer Fest will be finishing the final weekend in Philadelphia until next summer over Labor Day weekend! This place has it all, whether you are coming with a family or with friends. Boasting a large roller skating rink,  plenty of food options, games, mini-golf, and even rides! The great part, admission is free!

What better way to celebrate Labor Day weekend than with a night full of food, live music, and wine? This will sadly be the last night of the Chaddsford Winery’s summer series. In addition to half off happy hour from 5:00-7:00 PM, there will be food truck fare from Gemelli Gelato and Baby Blues BBQ Philly. There is absolutely no cover charge to attend, and wine and food are simply paid as you go! An important side note for those with little ones, children are welcome at this event, as long as they are under your supervision.

This German-themed festival is essentially Oktoberfest over Labor Day weekend!  For your entertainment, there will be rides, games, crafts, in addition to the delicious German cuisine to enjoy.
